“Help me to do it myself”

Maria Montessori

Developed by the Italian Physician Dr Maria Montessori, the Montessori method of education focuses on a holistic approach to education in the early years. She believed that education is not a mere acquisition of knowledge, but a preparation for life where children learn to grapple with the world
around them with great confidence and high self–esteem.

Freedom in Montessori

Montessori believed that a child must be free to explore and follow their own natural impulses, thus developing their potential and increasing their knowledge of the world around them. Within the prepared environment, the child must experience freedom of movement, freedom of exploration, freedom to interact socially, and freedom from interference from others. This freedom ultimately leads to a greater freedom: freedom of choice.

When a child has the freedom in a stimulating environment they begin to engage in activities which appeal to them. Engaging in activities of their choice and interest makes the child intensely focus and concentrate. As a consequence, the child is absorbed in self discipline which will lead to the joy of accomplishment.

The Montessori children are confident, independent learners who take responsibility towards the people and the environment around them. They develop an empathy towards their peers and are willing to help at all times.

Montessori Environment

The carefully prepared environment is quintessential in a Montessori classroom. The activities are set up to kindle the children's interest, to explore, experiment, discover and learn. The activities progress from easy to difficult and concrete to abstract in order to avoid unnecessary disappointment and to provide appropriate challenges as the child progresses through activities. The environment is calm, aesthetic and stimulating for the young explorers.
